Searching for the right place to invest in your skin’s health? You’ve likely encountered the terms “skin clinic,” “cosmetic dermatology,” and “board-certified dermatologist.” While these distinctions may seem confusing, understanding the nuances helps you choose the right level of care for your skin.
At Dermatology Aesthetics of Northern Kentucky, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Bushelman leads our skin clinic in Florence. Working under her expertise, our providers combine advanced aesthetic treatments and medical training to help you feel confident in your skin.
Let’s define these standards and discover the clinical power behind our practice.
What Is a Skin Clinic?
In Florence, our clinic specializes in advanced technologies and techniques to support your skin’s tone, texture, and tightness—aesthetic concerns that can make you look older than you feel.
We practice cosmetic dermatology, the art of improving the appearance of skin, with one important distinction.
Unlike conventional med spas, which offer aesthetic services without understanding their biological effect on your skin, our providers undergo extensive medical training to understand how treatment affects the skin on a cellular level.
This enables us to perform cosmetic procedures with greater precision, safety, and effectiveness than other clinics.
Meet Our Board-Certified Dermatologist
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Bushelman leads our skin clinic in Florence—and this defining element elevates our practice. Dr. Susan Bushelman approaches skincare with a distinctly medical lens, not solely an aesthetic one, backed by her certification from the American Board of Dermatology (ABD).
Beyond her role as our medical director for Dermatology Aesthetics of Northern Kentucky, Dr. Bushelman is a partner at Dermatology Associates of Northern Kentucky, where she continues to practice medical dermatology for over 25 years.

What Does “Board-Certified Dermatologist” Mean?
Board-certified dermatologists are medical professionals who specialize in supporting skin health and longevity.
While any medical professional can recommend skincare strategies, only certified dermatologists have completed specialized training under the American Board of Dermatology of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS).
Becoming a board-certified dermatologist is typically a 12-year journey that begins by obtaining a pre-medical Bachelor’s degree, followed by:
- Becoming an MD or DO after 4 years of medical school
- Gaining 1 year of general medicine or surgical experience
- Training for 3 years in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-certified residency program
- Passing the board exam offered by the ABD or ABPS, which tests their ability to diagnose and treat a variety of skin, hair, and nail conditions
