Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Can Improve Your Skin’s Overall Appearance.
Whether you have skin imperfections due to aging, acne, sun damage, or other reasons, revolutionary laser technologies are available in aesthetics that can help alleviate abnormalities and reveal healthier, younger-looking skin. One of our favorite laser treatments to address a myriad of skin concerns is erbium laser skin resurfacing. Thanks to this technology’s power in promoting new collagen and elastin formation, laser skin resurfacing can be a wonderful tool to help diminish or eliminate certain skin imperfections and improve your overall complexion for years to come.
How does laser skin resurfacing work?
Erbium laser skin resurfacing harnesses laser light energy to project concentrated pulsating beams into the skin where irregularities are present and effectively remove the thin outer layer (the epidermis) while also gently heating the underlying layer (dermis). This helps to remove the unwanted, damaged skin in a very precise manner one layer at a time without damaging any of the surrounding structures.
As the treatment area heals, the new skin that’s revealed appears smoother and younger in appearance. The resurfacing process also helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin for longer-lasting results and can also help lessen pigmentation issues from prior sun damage. The procedure itself typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the specific condition being addressed.
Am I a candidate for laser skin resurfacing?
If you have acne scars, fine lines, or sun damage, or if you simply feel like you look older than you actually are, erbium laser skin resurfacing may be a good option for you. It should be noted, however, that this treatment will not alleviate advanced signs of aging, such as sagging skin or deep wrinkles. During your consultation at Derm Aesthetics of Northern Kentucky, Dr. Susan Bushelman and her staff will explain the laser procedure in great detail to help you decide if it’s the best option to meet your individual aesthetic goals.
What skin conditions can erbium laser skin resurfacing address?
Erbium laser skin resurfacing has proven to be an effective treatment for improving the following skin concerns:
- Uneven skin tone & texture
- Fine lines & mild wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Acne scars
- Age spots
- Enlarged oil glands on the nose
- Blemishes
If any of these skin concerns are an unwanted part of your life and you’d like to address them once and for all, then we invite you to schedule a private consultation at Derm Aesthetics of Northern Kentucky.
What can I expect after laser skin resurfacing treatment?
Once your procedure is done, we’ll immediately apply a special ointment to ensure your skin stays hydrated and protected as it heals and send you home with specific aftercare instructions. Healing generally takes place over the next 10-21 days, depending on the specific area and the individual condition treated. Your skin may feel itchy, swollen, and appear red for the next several days. The itching or stinging sensation may last anywhere from 12 to 72 hours, followed by your skin likely becoming dry and starting to peel in about five to seven days.
For most patients, the resulting redness following treatment resembles a sunburn and may last for two to three months. Once the skin heals, you may use oil-free makeup to minimize the redness until it dissipates. In rare instances, side effects may include changes in skin pigmentation. We’ll go over all potential side effects at your consultation to make sure you have a clear understanding of what to expect in the days, weeks, and months following your treatment.
What are the results with laser skin resurfacing?
Once full healing has taken place, you’ll notice a difference in your skin’s quality and overall appearance in the treatment area. Optimal results are often gradual and progressive with laser skin resurfacing, so you’ll see continued improvement over time. The most improvement will likely be in your skin’s tone and texture above all else. The results can last for years if you maintain a good skin care regimen and avoid any prolonged sun exposure.
On that note, we highly recommend you avoid any unprotected sun exposure for about a year following treatment to prevent the threat of any irregular pigmentation. Any new sun damage may reverse your results. That said, daily sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is crucial.
