Who doesn’t want a radiant, glowing complexion? But the reality is that many people struggle with skin imperfections, such enlarged pores, uneven tone, and signs of aging (just to name a few). Fortunately, there are advanced laser treatments that can help. HALO® is one of our favorite non-invasive options at Derm Aesthetics of Northern Kentucky to potentially eliminate years of damage by triggering your body’s natural healing response. It’s all to help reveal that “HALO glow” our patients can’t stop talking about.

How does HALO work?

HALO uses two distinct wavelengths, ablative and non-ablative, to target multiple skin concerns. The basic difference between ablative and non-ablative laser treatments is that ablative lasers work to remove the top layer of skin, while non-ablative lasers heat up the underlying skin tissue (without harming the surface) so your skin produces new collagen. Whichever option is deemed appropriate for your particular skin concern, HALO can improve skin texture and clarity for all skin types and may help delay or prevent the need for more invasive procedures in the future.

What can I expect during a HALO treatment?

Before the treatment, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic ointment to numb the targeted area. As the HALO handpiece is gently rolled across your skin, its integrated cooling mechanism helps keep you comfortable. Immediately after treatment, most patients feel a warming sensation in the treatment area for about 30 to 60 minutes on average. That sensation may last a little longer if deeper depths of skin are addressed.

What can I expect after my HALO treatment?

Temporary tightness of the skin, redness, and swelling (similar to a mild to moderate sunburn) are fairly common for a few days following treatment. In about two to three days, a sandpaper-like texture will form on the skin. That’s due to microscopic epidermal necrotic debris (or MENDS) making their way to the surface. Depending on the treatment depth and intensity, the MENDS fall off by day four or five. We recommend using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer until the skin has naturally exfoliated. Also, sunscreen should be applied daily with no direct sun exposure for 7 days post-treatment. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work in one to two days after treatment.

What results can I expect from HALO treatment?

You should begin noticing overall improvement in your skin, including a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduced pore size, improved glow, and significant decrease in discoloration between two and five days after your treatment. But those results will likely continue to improve over time. Most patients see the greatest improvement in pigmentation in the first two to three weeks, followed by a skin regeneration phase that continues to improve for months. Many patients’ results can last for years, especially if sunscreen is a part their daily routine. With each additional HALO treatment, continued improvement will typically take place with a healthier, more youthful-looking glow.

How many HALO treatments will I need for best results?

Depending on your personal treatment goals, HALO may be performed as a single treatment or as part of a series. You may have the option of choosing one or two aggressive treatments or multiple gentle treatments to achieve the same goal over a longer period of time. We’ll discuss your individual concerns at your consultation and help you determine the best treatment path for you.
